Step 1

Take a new washcloth (not one that you have already used) and run it under warm water, gently insert into the nostril and hold it there until it cools off. Repeat several times or for around 15 minutes, making the cloth warm again each time, the point in this is to soften the hair follicle.

Place a slightly warmer (in fact slightly hot) washcloth back up your nostril, using your thumb to apply pressure from the washcloth to the ingrown hair, place your index finger on the outside of your nose, and rub the washcloth back and forth over the infected area of the inner nostril.

Step 3

Remove the washcloth from your nose and inspect it to see if any hairs have been removed, it will be difficult to tell whether the actual ingrown hair has been removed, generally if a hair on the cloth is accompanied by what looks like a small amount of puss then you have the hair in question. You may need to repeat this step several times, usually you will notice when the hair has been removed because of the relief of your pain.

Step 4

If you think the hair has come out then dip a cotton swab into some rubbing alcohol or alcohol of some sort, and apply to the infected area inside of your nostril. Use a finger on the outside of your nose so that you can locate the precise area of the ingrown hair / infection of the follicle. Even if you are unsure whether you have removed the hair it is important that you perform this step anyway, to prevent infection and to kill germs.

Step 5

Now apply alcohol every couple of hours to the area of the infection, alternatively use antiseptic cream or antibacterial ointment after the first time, use a fresh cotton swab each time.

Step 6

If the pain persists then it is unlikely that you have successfully removed the ingrown hair, or it could be that you have removed it but the area had already become significantly infected. If the pain persists or there is any noticeable signs of infection (such as a redness on the outside of your nose) then see a doctor or a dermatologist. And remember, stop plucking or waxing, get yourself a cheap nose hair trimmer and avoid this happening again!
